What is Interfaith?
in·ter·faith (ntr-fth) adj. Of, relating to, or involving persons of different religious faiths: an interfaith marriage; an interfaith forum.
Interfaith may mean that a person choses to draw from many religions. It may be simply recognizing within you or someone else what is spiritual. Interfaith encompasses the idea of agnostic or atheist in that these are beliefs about spirituality and the presence or absence of the Divine. Many today are defining themselves as spiritual but not doctrinally religious. Some people may draw on practices of many beliefs. For example the spiritual practice of yoga.
Interfaith Ministers seek to hold all life as sacred, mediating within themselves and through their beliefs, acceptance of all faith practices that support health and dignity and promote understanding, harmony and peace among the peoples of the world.
One common thread binds us as demonstrated in this example of the "Golden Rule:"
Baha'i Faith ~ "Blessed is he who preferreth his brother before himself."
Buddhism ~"Hurt not others in ways that you yourself would find hurtful."
Christianity ~ "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you"
Islam ~ "No one of you is a believer until he desires for his brother that which he desires for himself."
Judaism ~ "What is hateful to you, do not to your fellow man. That is the entire Law: all the rest is commentary."
Interfaith Ministers come from a wide variety of backgrounds and are dedicated to serving the spiritual needs of all those who seek guidance, counseling and assistance irrespective of religion, ethnic background, gender, sexuality or age. As Interfaith Ministers we have chosen to respect and appreciate the diversity of paths and approaches to personal belief systems.
Training
Interfaith Ministers study the world's major religions and spiritual traditions and receive practical training in ministering to others, providing services for all the rights of passage for the human experience. Trained in the practical aspects of ministry, an Interfaith Minister creates and conducts personal and individual ceremonies for weddings, commitment and re-commitment ceremonies, memorial services, wakes, funerals, baby blessings, home or business blessings, seasonal rituals, guided meditations, inspirational talks/sermons and more. Please see my ordaining institution’s website for more information about interfaith http://www.newseminary.org/
“All the great religions deserve respect and, if practiced seriously, are paths to love and peace.” (The Dalai Lama)
